Can an early-career artist/curator apply for Àsìkó Art School?
Answer: Applications are open to all artists who have been professionally active for at least three years, as well as curators and writers from across Africa with at least two years of experience.
Do I need an art degree to apply for Àsìkó Art School?
Answer: No. Applications are open to all art professionals, with or without formal art education.
Can an African artist/curator who has never lived in Africa apply?
Answer: Yes. Àsìkó is primarily targeted at artists and curators from Africa and the African Diaspora.
When can I pay the participation fees?
Answer: Selected participants must pay the participation fee ($850 USD for non-local participants and $450 USD for local participants), which contributes to the programme’s operations, a modest production budget, and the final project. Fees must be paid by March 31, 2025, to secure acceptance into the programme.
Do the participation fees include logistics for participants?
Answer: No. Non-resident participants are expected to cover their travel costs to and from Cairo, as well as their living expenses during the programme. Accommodation will be provided for non-resident participants. Also, lunch will be provided for all participants during teaching days.
When is the appropriate time to apply for funding for Àsìkó Art School?
Answer: We advise you to apply for travel funding whether or not your participation in the programme has been confirmed to avoid missing application deadlines.
Do I need to be available in Cairo for the entirety of the programme?
Answer: All participants must be available for the full programme in Cairo (April 27–May 25, 2025) as well as the four virtual programme activities before and after the immersive programme in Cairo.
What is the programme structure for Àsìkó Cairo 2025?
Answer: This edition is loosely divided into three segments, each led by a lead artist/curator with their own style, working methods, and perspectives. Each segment will be complemented by 1–3 visiting guest speakers (over 4–5 days), including curators, artists, historians, filmmakers, writers, and others.
Who can apply?
Answer: Artists strand- Visual artists who work in any media, and have been professionally active for at least three years.
Curatorial strand- Curators, cultural producers, art researchers, and art writers with at least two years of professional practice. Applicants who have participated in Àsìkó more than once are not eligible to apply.

Is it necessary to include the details of my reference contacts in my application?
Answer: Yes. It is important to include the requested information for your references, as the team will contact them.
Are participants expected to produce a project at the end of the programme?
Answer: Participants (artists and curators) will collaborate on the production and presentation of a collective project, which will be shared during the final week of the programme.
Are there scholarships available to participants?
Yes. We have up to 50% scholarships available to selected non-local(African-based) participants, and up to 100% scholarships available to selected local participants (Egyptians).
This scholarship covers only participation fees.
